Undergraduate Research Opportunities

I have advised Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROPs) on the development of precedent (2003), retirements from the Supreme Court (2004), foreign law citations in Supreme Court opinions (2009), the use of precedent by the Supreme Court (2009), the relationship between the Supreme Court's docket and public opinion (2009-2010), the relationship between gender and judicial decision making (2019), a comparative analysis of judicial symbols in courtrooms (2021-2022), an analysis of the extent to which justices follow media about their decisions (2022), and the extent to which ideology plays a role in the clerks Supreme Court justices choose (2023).

Each of the completed projects has led to either a Ph.D. dissertation or extended research project (after graduation) for the student researcher (Darryn Beckstrom in 2004, Amanda Bryan in 2010, and Grace Hertzog 2022), or has extended my own research projects (Ryan Black 2003, Andrew Hart 2009, Al Wepsala 2009, Kate Seivert 2019, Matt Cota 2021, Dane Germany 2023).
